Prickly Pear Seeds

$4.00

Ever go harvesting with that special someone and make jam? Only to realize you made the jam wrong and realize that special someone had moved on? No, we aren’t talking about strawberries. We are talking about these drought tolerant prickly pear—try getting over things and grow these 3+ft tall and 3ft+ wide gems with extra spiky oval flat leaf pads maturing in 3 years—so you’ll have plenty of time to get over things while it produces beautiful red/spiky fruit with a beautiful bright pink fleshy sweet inside. We like making the jam with the seeds in it but obviously that someone didn’t like how the jam turned out.

Start 2 seeds indoor per pot—really important to scratch seed coating with sandpaper or abrasive surface to get past the hard shell inhibiting germination and soak in water for 24 hours. Do this with wild pine nuts to get some trees going too! - plant in soft potting soil 1/8”” deep in pot 2.5” or deeper under plastic dome with small openings. Best started with a heating mat or area with most sun/heat/light and keep the pot humid by misting daily. Germination is variable but expect seeding growth in 4-6 weeks so don’t give up on them and keep the conditions the same! Once established make sure they have full sun and keep them in the pot for at least 3 months after germination. Cold hardy—but make sure to baby them for the first 6 months. Minimum 35 seeds—with out wild harvested please contact us at farm@spacedogfarms if problems persist after 3 months.
