Jack just texted us and said these pinto beans aren’t the ones in his “magic beanstalk fiction” but it is no fairy tale that these beautiful bushing pinto beans have a multifaceted use. Great for dried pinto beans for soups and re-fried beans or steamed for a green bean replacement when young, it sure does put on quite a show for your garden! Reaching up to 1.5 to 2ft, it provides great nitrogen fixation to your field, check the nodules from the roots to see the sacks and leave the plant in when you till and prepare your soil for next year. Reaching full maturity in 85-90 days from direct seeding (we don’t recommend starting them inside as transplants, corn and root crops too). Let some seed pods turn dry to save these magic beans and start your only fairy tale with giant puggles and farmers market vendors selling you bean seeds.

-  After last frost (May is a safe bet for all of the continental USA or throughout Sprint, direct seed one bean, 1” deep, 3” every in area with full sun( try companion planting with the Three Sisters method using squash and corn (https://www.nal.usda.gov/collections/stories/three-sisters) plant them in the middle if your corn/squash has already started and will be a great ground cover to suppress weeds. No trellis needed.—Amend soil with compost and organic fertilizers like bat guano or fish meal before planting and apply every other weekly by apply and scratching it in before watering once plant has become established (about 1ft tall)- Harvest when 4-5” long when green for fresh cooking—tougher skin that green beans but if you boil them it is just as good! Or harvest bean seeds when skin has full dried for your favorite dried bean cooking. Minimum 70+ seeds.
