a seedy trip - circa 2020
Welcome reader! Space Dog Farms, a small farm specializing in regionally adapted seeds and plants to the South West started with humble beginnings and with a pocketful of seeds.
For years and years, there were time passing fantasies about starting a farm, but I always came up with an excuse: that I didn’t have land, I didn’t have enough resources, I didn’t have non-pirated version of Turbo Tax, etc. Sometimes you have to jump in and do it. They say the best time to plant a tree was 420 days ago, and second best time is now – probably.
Good question. I started Space Dog Farms in 2020 (with zero experience growing/saving/selling seed so it has been a ride of W’s and L’s) in a very small studio apartment in Minneapolis, Minnesota. So, our first plot was in tiny kitchen with a noodle strainer and produce saved from the farmers market, and ambition to scrap as many seeds as possible. We started to send out squash seeds mailing envelopes, laced with Scotch tape and stick figured like produce pictures. Sitting on just 4 varieties of melons/squash for a while– we are proud to be to offer 100+ varieties through trading, growing, breeding, collecting, and doing anything to get seed ways to increase the collection.
This may or may not be some underdog story but we would like to always remember the humble beings and strive towards being the most wholesome and puggle friend seed company. Yes, you in the back = that is an excellent question. Space Dog Farm’s came up through appreciation of Space like NASA space not we need time space. Dog because I love my puggle Lunabear Josephine Jackson Not a Killa Jo (you’ll notice a lot of photos of her during steamy nights of Photoshopping), and Farm because we enjoying farming.
In the late summer of 2020, SDF floated to Albuquerque, New Mexico and leased a ¼ acre and greenhouse space. It’s now a dedicated plot to grow unique seeds that we standby and enjoy growing to eat (when it’s not snickers, monsters, magic and menthols flowing in our system). As we move onto the future, inevitability, we are stoked to offer a variety of unique seeds.
Through our diligent breeding, growing and acquiring seeds from other wholesome farms and nature, me and the puggle strive to keep growing seeds over and over again to adapt them to the drought ridden South West (they have done great in all regions). So, voluntarily and involuntary buckle up your seat belts and get ready for the space dog farms experience. – NBA.
